The old city of Dubrovnic is located on the Adriatic Sea coast where its thick stone walls and fortifications are legacy of a turbulent history. This shot captures part of that history and also shows why Dubrovnik is now a popular tourist destination.

Favela at Belo Horizonte, Brazil

From a distance this photo could depict some ancient brick wall with tufts of green sprouting from the cracks. On closer inspection it's seen as an entire mountain-side covered with makeshift houses. Such shanty towns are known as Favelas and are found in every city in Brazil. In Rio de Janeiro the favelas overlook the luxury hotels and famous beaches and are home to one in four residents of the city.

Grand St Bernard Pass, Switzerland / Italy

The Grand-St-Bernard Pass is the oldest route over the Alps and one of the most dramatic. The hospice at the pass has been run by monks for close to 1,000 years. Today most motorists traverse the Alps by the St Bernard tunnel but the road over the pass remains open for the curious and the adventurous.
With the mists rolling in this photo perfectly captures the mood of this forbidding place.

Winter in Germany
